Inviro Medical Devices and the American Nurses Association Sponsor Workplace Safety Survey

Independent Study Captures Nurses’ Opinions About Workplace Safety in the Healthcare Industry

ATLANTA, GA, July 22, 2008 – Inviro Medical Devices (www.inviromedical.com) and the American Nurses Association (ANA) (www.nursingworld.org) released their 2008 Study of Nurses’ Views on Workplace Safety and Needlestick Injuries after surveying more than 700 U.S. nurses nationwide. Hoping to understand the ever-present concerns that face healthcare workers on a daily basis, both organizations wanted to capture nurses’ opinions and experiences related to workplace safety in the healthcare industry, including the general understanding of needlestick injuries.

“For three consecutive years, Inviro and the ANA have sought to better understand the challenges faced by healthcare workers on the job each day,” said Tony Holler, interim Chief Executive Officer of Inviro Medical Devices.

“Our annual surveys address issues surrounding needlestick incidents and related risk of infection to U.S. nurses. By promoting the findings, we hope more healthcare institution leaders will recognize the importance of and adopt new safety syringe technology as well as encourage better workplace safety in their own healthcare facilities.”

The 2008 survey revealed that 64 percent of nurses have been accidentally stuck by a needle while on-the-job, with 74 percent of that figure reporting that the incident involved a contaminated needle. Further, 55 percent of nurses believe that their workplace safety negatively impacts their personal safety, and the vast majority claim to put patient safety before their own. The survey also found that nurses were afraid to discuss needlestick injuries with the management in their department due to the length of time it takes, the thought that they aren’t at risk of infection, and fear of the possible repercussions.

With an eye toward the future, nurses also expressed interest in using a safety syringe with environmental benefits, favoring medical devices that create less medical waste, use less paper in packaging and shipping containers, are manufactured by a company with an environmentally friendly program, and use recyclable components.
