VON Partners With Inviro Medical for Canadian Launch of InviroSNAP® Safety Syringe
Innovative Medical Device Designed to Help Safeguard Healthcare Workers From Needlestick Injuries
ATLANTA – May 30, 2006 – As legislation rolls out across Canada mandating that healthcare facilities provide safety devices to protect healthcare workers from needlestick injuries, the VON (Victorian Order of Nurses ) is partnering with Inviro Medical to help launch the InviroSNAP!® Safety Syringe. VON will train institutional staff and public health departments to use the easy-to-operate device, which was designed to protect healthcare workers from injuries and occupational exposure to bloodbourne pathogens.
“Safety of healthcare workers goes hand in hand with the safety of our clients and innovative devises like the InviroSNAP! Safety Syringe will help us protect our employees at VON and others,” says VON Prairie Branch Manager, Linda Curwin.
“We believe our patented manually retractable technology provides enhanced safety and ease-of-use compared to other safety syringes currently available,” says Gareth Clarke, CEO of Inviro Medical. “The VON is a highly respected organization offering valuable services throughout Canada. Our joint training initiative sends a positive signal to Canadian healthcare organizations, as well as to provinces where legislation is pending.”
Working with the VON Prairie Branch, Inviro Medical recently launched its product in Saskatchewan, and will conduct training, implementation and evaluation for institutions throughout Canada.
“With 58 branches in all provinces of Canada, VON is well positioned to provide the nursing expertise to train peers to use Inviro Medical’s important health and safety technology, as well as address a dominant issue in the healthcare field today,” says Ann Phillips, VON National Contracts Coordinator. Safety syringes are necessary to help protect workers from occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV) and others diseases.
While most safety syringes are retrofitted using add-on pieces, the uniquely engineered InviroSNAP! Safety Syringe looks and functions like a traditional syringe and is easy to use. With hand and fingers safely positioned behind the needle, the clinician administers the dose, pulls the plunger back — causing the needle to retract inside the barrel — and snaps off the plunger, permanently disabling the device.
“Designed by a practicing Canadian nurse and Canadian surgeon — motivated by concerns about the severe medical, psychological and economic consequences of accidental needlestick injuries — well in advance of legislative mandates, this device protects healthcare workers by reducing potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens,” explains Clarke.
